Vista MBR vs. XP MBR
Just
curious, but how much of a price difference would you be paying if you have them install XP for you? If the price change is more than you would have to pay for XP, you might be better off letting them put Vista on it, then replace it with a self-purchased copy of XP after you receive the machine.

Vista now needs CD to boot after installing XP on slave--suggestio
So when you install xp after vista, the key point is to restore the boot sector. If you don't, you can write all the MBRs you want, they won't fix your problem. No one has said that only the MBR had to be changed to "fix your problem". (Please note that it is not I who has the problem of the inquiring poster.

Unable to install Vista.. (ERROR After Installitation.)
The problem is that your XP was installed on completely different hardware. If you move the hard drive into another computer, at the very least you would need to do a Repair Install of XP - which doesn't always work, necessitating a full Clean Install. And it is much tricksier to install XP after Vista because the

So, I would really like to know if, say installing XP after Vista necessitates restoring Vista's version of the MBR as well as the Vista system partition's boot sector. If you have the means, John John, a byte-for-byte comparison of XP's and Vista's MBRs would really be a help. Absent that, just seeing if they are

Vista printing to shared XP printer
After that my e-mail and usenet client could not access servers. All the browsers worked fine. Redoing all the networking after uninstalling it all did not fix it. A reinstall of the clients wouldn't fix it either. I did a repair install of XP Pro and that didn't fix it. I cleared my second drive, swapped cables to

The repair install for XP would potentially work for what, only a set number of key elements replaced, beyond that and you will be required to get an authorization/activation, which, after support ends, ...... then what? XP to vista
Anyways, any tips from those of you that have set up a dual boot between Vista and XP would be greatly appreciated. I just put in my new hard drive I got for Vista. Booted with the Vista DVD and told it to format and install on the new hard drive. After awhile it was all done. Vista took care of everything.

Obviously, I wouldn't do this unless I was confident about what I was installing and that my system was clean to begin with. And my OS is XP. Does that...<avoids eye contact>...matter? Who knows? ; ) The posters in this thread seem to be using Vista so your result might at least be an example of "YMMV".

Not to sure about Vista but with Microsoft you need to install the old OS before the newer one. 98 before 2000, 2000 before XP....
