Installing XP after Vista

All,
If I install XP on a dif partition, will it break the vista boot part?
Anyone tried?
Steve

Now I'm not saying this is right, but I installed Vista 5270 (couple of months ago) and then XP Media Center Edition on afterwards on a different partition. Yeh it broke it, and I was only able to boot up XP MCE. No idea why mind you.

Yes. Same as installing Windows 98 after Windows 2000 or XP would "break" 2000/XP.
After you've installed XP, you'll need to repair the Vista installation. That will restore the new Boot Manager, that supercedes the old NTLDR.

Yes, that is expected bahavior. Vista owns the boot manager after it is installed. I can't tell you how, but I would imagine that there is a way to preserve the Vista boot manager listing and restore it after the XP install. Perhaps someone with some experience with this will jump in. -steve -- Stephen Boots MVP MSN.COM sboots@mvps.org

Hi,
I have 2 partitions on my drive, after a recent format I installed Vista as the only operating system, but now something has come up and I need to install XP.
What is the best way to do this without the XP bootloader over writing the Vista one?
Thanks
Jon

XP is not gonna bootable on the logical partition, it needs to be on C:, so your best option is to run XP Setup by booting off the CD, format the Vista partition, and install XP on it. Then reinstall Vista, but this time install it to the logical partition. http://windowsconnected.com/blogs/andre/archive/2006/06/08/3002.aspx -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

Hi,
Does that mean their is no way to install XP on D: and Vista on C: and have them dual boot?
I can install XP on drive D: but like I said I need the vista bootloader to load both operating systems.
Or do you mean that XP just cannot install on D: ?
Thanks Jon

You can install XP on D:, but its not gonna be bootable after you install Vista on C:. There are two parts to the Vista bootloader, one for loading Vista and another for legacy operating systems, which located under the Earlier Versions of Windows boot entry.
Just do this and I can guarantee you, won't have any problems.

Hi,
Just an update. I left Win XP and Vista where they were and used Bcdedit , seemed to work ok, I can now dual boot XP and Vista, was pretty painless too :)
Thanks Jon

Jonj
How did you do this?
I need to do the same thing.
I can open BCDEdit but am not sure which commands to use and how to edit the file.
Thanks.
